Lesson 3

Background observations

Lesson Overview

Background observations

In this lesson, students will make preliminary observations and assessments to generate ideas for a firm prediction for research.

A general exploration of light energy consumption data is undertaken by calculating the energy consumption of lights in the classroom. Using the real time school consumption data (Planet Watch), the peak energy consumption period is determined. The peak consumption is broadly compared with school activities in the same time period.

Lesson Objectives

  • Consider the need for collecting some background data to form some ideas about impacts on energy consumption
  • Calculate the energy consumption of lights in the classroom
  • Extrapolate the light energy consumption for the whole school
  • Use real school data to determine peak energy consumption
  • Relate peak energy consumption to school activities

Evidence of Learning

  • Use data tables to calculate the energy consumption of lights (impact) in the classroom
  • Extrapolate by estimation and calculation the light energy consumption for the whole school
  • Identify peak energy consumption for a given school day
  • Determine the total energy consumed in one hour
  • Identify school activities that occurred during peak usage time

Example Learning Sequence

  • Discuss the need for taking a look at some background data
  • Use background data to determine the light energy consumption in a classroom
  • Extrapolate the energy consumption of lights in the whole school
  • Obtain data on the peak energy consumption occur in the school
  • What is the peak energy consumption in the school for a 5-minute interval?
  • How much energy is consumed in one hour around the peak time?
  • Can the peak of energy consumption be related to any significant activities occurring in the school?
