Conducting and absorbing heat

Throughout this lesson series, students will examine different ways that heat can be produced, including solar. Students will conduct experiments to examine how heat can be used to melt solid objects. Students will be introduced to the terms conductors and insulators and will explore different ways heat can be conducted or absorbed. Students will examine how colour affects the absorption of heat. Students will consider variables during experiments and explain fair testing and safety.

Lesson Objectives

Students will:

  • Discuss how heat can be conducted and absorbed.
  • Discuss which objects are conductors and insulators.
  • Explore different ways that heat can be conducted through solids and liquids eg hot water (spoons), solar energy (sand).
  • Conduct an experiment to investigate how colour effects the absorption of heat energy from the Sun (optional).
